Real Photo Postcards: Their Role in Deltiology, Photography, & Historic Preservation

10/16/22 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Founder of the Institute of American Deltiology Donald R. Brown will present a slide show and display real photo postcards of Lebanon County, the Lebanon Valley, and elsewhere. He will explore the role of real photo photography as well as their part in the Great Postcard Craze of 1905-1914. This medium made its debut between 1902 and 1904, recording grass roots activities and events of people and of places. Thus, real photo postcard provide documentation important for historic preservation in our time.

Don Brown, a postcard collector since 1943, is keenly interested in studying and demonstrating the medium of the picture postcard as a document of our American heritage past and present. Mr. Brown retired from the PA State Library in 1991and in 1993 incorporated his large collection of postcards and books as the Institute of American Deltiology, a research center at 300 West Main Ave., Myerstown, PA.
