Susanna Wright: Polymath Patriot Presentation

Elizabeth Dillion will be showcasing Susanna Wright’s mastery in language, science, reading and the human spirit through her letters and poetry. In her surviving poems, we see Susanna Wright’s Quaker faith played no small part in her understanding of the equality of men and women. Her most famous poem “To Eliza Norris at Fairhill” further asserts her belief in the importance of self-realization and that, “No right has man his equal to control.”

Through her letters we see her connections and friendship with important figures like Charles Thomson, James Logan, Hannah Griffitts and Benjamin Franklin. Susanna Wright was highly regarded and respected by all who met her. She was a remarkable woman of learning and wit, who also took action when she felt it was needed. This talk will be both a history on this illustrious figure, and an argument of her importance in the history of Pennsylvania.
